This is an edited version of the "Book" written by Clarinda M. Erskine in 1891. Both grammar and punctuation have been revised to read more clearly. There is also a version of this letter which is identical to the original, misspellings, strange capitalization scheme and all. I have tried to give a hierarchical structure to the generations, which will make it a bit easier to figure out who is who. Please note that it may appear as if I have "skipped" a number in the formatting. Actually, if a child died young, and is not explicitly listed, I skipped that number so that the birth order remains intact. Comments added after Clarinda wrote this document are set off by square brackets [ ]; these include subsequent events, and possible corrections of information.
I am descended from Elizabeth Erskine/Samuel Bushfield, Jane Bushfield/Robert McFarland, Margaret McFarland/Abner Doble and have further information on those branches and their descendants.

The memorandum of the Erskine Family.
Written April 1st 1891 by Clarinda Margaret Erskine, the Daughter
Samuel Vance Erskine of West Alexander, Wash. Co., PA.
At the time of the great massacre in Scotland the Erskine family lived in Scotland. Some of them fought under Sir William Wallace and Robert Bruce, King of Scotland in the fifteenth century. Lady Helen Mear, wife of Sir William Wallace, was a Erskine.
Ralph Erskine of Shielfield, Scotland was the Father of thirty-three children a family of considerable repute and standing in the county of Merse and originally descended from the ancient house of Mar.
Rev. Henry Erskine was one of the thirty-three children. He preached the gospel first in Cornwall, Northumberland County, England and afterwards in Chirnside five miles from Berwick upon the Leed river in Scotland. A man eminent in his day, and justly distinguished for his piety and firm attachment to Presbyterian principles, he was persecuted during the reign of Charles II and James II of England. This persecution began in the year of 1660, lasted twenty-eight years and terminated when William Prince of Orange was proclaimed King of England. The Orange men celebrated that day, the 12th day of Aug. 1688, ever since. Rev Henry Erskine had three son's that I know of, Hugh, Ebenezer and Ralph.
Hugh Erskine married and fled with His family to the north of Ireland during this time of the persecution. The other two were ministers. The Rev. Ebenezer Erskine was born June 22nd 1680. Rev. Ralph Erskine was born at Monilaws, Northumberland County England March 15th 1685.
Ebenezer Erskine preached first in Portmoak. In the year 1731 he was removed to Stirling Scotland. He with five others seceded from the established church of England. He was elected to the moderatorship of the synod of Perth. He preached the sermon before synod Oct. 18th 1732 which gave offense so on the 6th of Dec. 1733 the six ministers met at Gairney Bridge Hamlet, formed a new presbytery themselves and were the founders of the Associate or Seceder Church of Scotland. The ministers that seceded were Ebenezer and Ralph Erskine, William Wilson, Alexander Moncrieff, James Fisher, and Thomas Mair. Rev. Ebenezer Erskine wrote the Preface to the first part of Fisher's Catechism in Feb. 1753 and finished it as his son-in-law, Rev James Fisher died before he had finished his Catechism. Rev James Fisher preached first at Kinclavin and afterwards Glasgow. One hundred and fifty years after the constitute the first secession presbytery, on the 5th of Dec. 1883, they erected a monument to the honor of these six men at Gairney Bridge. Rev. Ebenezer Erskine preached his last sermon from his bed on the text 'This God is our God for ever and ever. He will be our guide even unto death.' He died at Stirling on June 2nd 1754, age 74 years, and 51 years of ministry.
Rev. Ralph Erskine preached in Dunfermline, Scotland and was married twice. His first marriage was to Miss Margaret Dewar, Daughter of the Lord of Lassadia, on July 15th 1714. They had ten children, five sons and five daughters. Three were ministers: Henry, John and James. Henry preached in Falkirk. John preached at Lesslie, and James preached at Stirling. All died in the prime of life. His second wife was Miss Margaret Simson. They had four sons, three of whom died young and one married and lived in London England. Rev. Ralph Erskine died Nov. 6th 1752, age 68 years, and 42 years of ministry at Dunfermline, Scotland. In Bryburg Abbey [is this Dryburgh Abbey?] there is a marble tablet erected to the memory of Ebenezer and Ralph Erskine.

In writing about the Friend I often think of the lines of the
poet.
They are parted and sundered
By mountain and wave
And some in the cold silent tomb of the grave
Many of the Friends I have written about
have gone to their silent slumbers and
the rest will soon follow.
Not lost but only gone before
They beckon us to that faire shore.
Where reigns an undeclining day.
And where every tear is washed away.
Dearest Friends thou hast left us.
Here there loss we deeply feel.
But tis God that hath bereft us.
He can all our sorrow's heal.
Peaceful be thy silent slumbers.
Peaceful in the grave so low.
Thou no more will join our numbers.
Thou no more our song shall know.
Yet again we hope to meet thee.
When the day's of life are fled.
Then in heaven with joy to greet thee.
Where no farewell tears is shed.
Yours until the day brake
and the shadows flee away.
Clarinda M. Erskine.
